WCHF’s An Evening with Tony Blair a Great Success!
Over 900 business, community and political leaders attended Women’s College Hospital Foundation’s gala An Evening with Tony Blair on Thursday May 29th in the Grand Ballroom at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre.
“Without a doubt, our event was a tremendous success!” says Foundation President & CEO Joanne Cole. “Mr. Blair was an engaging and entertaining speaker; Valerie Pringle provided her trademark flair as emcee and in her interview of Mr. Blair; the dinner and décor were first-class. Dr. Steven Narod’s Testing for Hereditary Cancer Genes in Ontario Jewish women Meets with Overwhelming Response
Genetic testing is at the centre of a new Canadian research project, which looks at Jewish women's greater tendency to carry the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. The presence of these genes indicates a higher risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
The study, being led by Dr. Steven Narod of the Familial Breast Cancer Research Unit at the Women’s College Research Institute, will evaluate how common mutations are among the Jewish population, and whether or not it is possible to identify women with a genetic predisposition to developing cancer who otherwise might not come to the attention of the medical community. The project was announced in May 2008 and drew significant media attention, including several articles in the Globe and Mail, and the required 1,000 participants quickly volunteered.

Thanking a Dedicated Supporter…
Rosa Cordiano knows first hand the importance of the osteoporosis research being conducted at the Women’s College Research Institute. She is happy to support Women’s College through regular monthly donations. In addition to benefiting directly from the trials in which she has participated, she feels she is helping future generations. “Women’s College helped my future,” says Rosa. “It’s important to support research that is being done about women, for women.”

Donate your BCE Shares to Women’s College
This is a great time to donate your BCE shares to Women’s College. If your donation is completed before the buy-out (expected to close in early December 2008), you will receive a tax receipt for the full market value of the shares, and won’t have to pay tax on the increase in value – because there is no capital gains tax on securities when they are donated to a registered charity. Your gift will help to build a bright future for women everywhere!
