June and John Wevers:
Grateful patients find a special way to celebrate exceptional care at Women’s College

It was, almost literally, a match made in heaven.

June grew up on a farm outside Meaford, Ontario. John grew up in Toronto and after a short stint in teaching, joined CIBC. They met through a church choir.

That was nearly 35 years ago, and John and June Wevers are still happily married. They give some of the credit for that to their Women’s College Hospital family physician, Dr. Deborah Levitan.

When the Wevers’ first family doctor retired, a colleague of John’s suggested they join the family practice at the Hospital. “It’s been a fantastic relationship,” John says. “Dr. Levitan is a great lady, easy to talk to and very knowledgeable about many things.”

The Wevers say it was her thoroughness that led her to catch several potentially serious health issues and get John the care he needed quickly. “She was very observant about little things and checked them out,” says John. “She must have a fantastic network, because we’ve always been referred expeditiously to good people. You hear about long wait times for specialists, but we’ve never had any problems.” John has had surgery for thyroid and prostate problems. June is a patient with the Multidisciplinary Osteoarthritis Program.

The Wevers made a special gift in honour of Dr. Levitan several years ago, and have been monthly donors for many years. Recently while updating their wills, they decided to include a bequest to Women’s College. “We don’t have a large income,” says John, “so this is a way to make a more a significant gift.”

Adds June: “We picked Women’s College for this bequest because of what’s happening there. As a woman I think it’s absolutely wonderful that there is a hospital specializing in women’s health. Even if it comes down the road a bit, we feel that making this gift is a good thing for us to do.”
